We finally have some performance numbers for the new iPhone 5S, and the results are incredible! The new A7 chip in the super-phone utterly annihilates all of its competition in benchmarks testing. Now, of course we must offer the disclaimer that synthetic benchmarks do not necessarily translate into real-world performance, but these numbers are so phenomenal, we would be shocked if they didn't contribute to an obviously snappier and more fluid experience. Here's the breakdown of numbers from the various tests:

Sunspider Javascript Benchmark - (lower is better)
  • Apple iPhone 5S = 415.7
  • Apple iPhone 5 = 712.7
  • Sony Xperia Z1 = 746.2
  • LG G2 = 932.8
  • HTC One = 977.9
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 = 1082.9
Mozilla Kraken - (lower is better)
  • Apple iPhone 5S = 5931.8
  • Sony Xperia Z1 = 7636
  • LG G2 = 7812
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 = 12227
  • Apple iPhone 5 = 13888
  • HTC One = 14598
Basemark X On-screen - (higher is better)
  • Apple iPhone 5s = 27.685
  • Apple iPhone 5 = 17.961
  • Sony Xperia Z1 = 17.007
  • LG G2 = 14.662
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 = 9.148
  • HTC One = 8.236
GFXBench Fill Rate Off-screen - (higher is better)
  • Apple iPhone 5S = 3317.1
  • Apple iPhone 5 = 1779.7
  • Sony Xperia Z1 = 1372.3
  • LG G2 = 1240.9
  • HTC One = 883.7
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 = 820.4
GFXBench T-Rex HD On-Screen - (higher is better)
  • Apple iPhone 5S = 35
  • Sony Xperia Z1 = 23
  • LG G2 = 21
  • Samsung Galaxy S4 = 16
  • HTC One = 14
  • Apple iPhone 5 = 13
To put these numbers into further perspective, we have have a GPU bandwidth comparison chart pitting the new iPhone 5S against a number of different devices across multiple industries, from tablets to consoles. (We are simply using the raw GFlops output of the GPU for comparison, although several different ways exist to compare GPUs.) Here's the scoop:

Device GPU comparison chart in approximate GFlops -
  • Samsung Galaxy Nexus - PowerVR SGX 540 - 6.1 GFlops
  • Average white box Chinese phone - MT6589 - 9.2
  • Advanced white box Chinese phone - MT6589T - 11.4
  • Apple iPhone 5 - SGX543 MP3 (w/ Apple A6) - 28.8
  • Early 2013 Android flagship (HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4) - Adreno 320 (w/ Snapdragon 600) - 51.2
  • Current 2013 Android Flagships (Any Snapdragon 800 with Adreno 330 equipped devices) - 71
  • Average Tegra 4 device - 72
  • Apple iPad 4 - SGX554 MP4 (w/ Apple A6X) - 76.8
  • Apple iPhone 5s - PowerVR G6430 (w/ Apple A7) - 76.8
And finally, just by way of comparison, the current generation gaming consoles in the industry have the following numbers. Here they are,
  • Sony Playstation 3 - Nvidia G70 - 228.8
  • XBOX 360 - ATI R500 Xenos - 240
We didn't include the theoretical numbers of the next-gen Xbox One and PS4 simply because they are unreleased devices and have not been tested in the wild. Regardless, the fact that the new iPhone 5S' GPU is almost a third as fast as a gaming console, really showcases just how far graphics have evolved on our amazing little smartphones. Perhaps one day our smart-devices will evolve enough to replace our gaming consoles. How much gaming do you do on your iPhone or other smart-device?
