Philip Elmer-DeWitt at Fortune’s Apple 2.0 blog writes today that off the back of those stellar iPhone 4S sales figures for Q4 of 2011, Apple has now risen two places in IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Phone Vendors Top 5, which includes all types of mobile phones, not just smartphones. IDC’s Kevin Restivo said that the iPhone 4S has been a keen driver of smartphone sales, which have continued to rise, with shipments of Apple’s newest phone growing 96.2% in 2011 and 128.4% in the last quarter. However, despite such huge growth for Apple, its share of 6% of worldwide shipments in 2011 still sees it languishing a long way behind leader Nokia, with its 27% share, and second-placed Samsung with its 21.3% share. That said, Elmer-DeWitt notes that despite having such a small share compared to the top two companies, Apple still comes out on top financially, as back in July 2011, before the release of the iPhone 4S, Apple was found to be earning nearly two-thirds of global mobile phone profits.[/FONT] Not bad business!
