What device are you using? If your using a 3GS then you can update via iTunes to 5.0.1. If you're on an Original or 3G neither will support the 5.0.1 upgrade & you'll have to use the Safari browser.

Since you're on a 3GS you can update via iTunes. If you want to Jailbreak... do so via redsn0w. It's fully compatible...
