AppleInsider reports that well-sourced KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has today issued a note to investors in which he has said that upstream iPhone suppliers are intending to increase production to between 120 million and 150 million units in the second half of Apple’s fiscal year 2017. If these figures prove to be accurate, it would mean that iPhone sales in 2017 could easily exceed previous records of between 110 million to 120 million units for the iPhone 6, which presently stands as Apple’s best-selling iPhone.

Kuo says that there are several reasons why demand for the 2017 iPhone could reach unprecedented levels, citing in particular the appeal of the high-end OLED model with “notably superior specifications.”

Aside from the premium model, Kuo also thinks the new 4.7-inch LCD model will have great appeal to consumers, with its glass back and wireless charging facility and mid-range price adding to its desirability. Kuo added that he thinks that the 5.5-inch iPhone Plus will be cannibalized by the new flagship OLED model, which will have a screen size of either 5.1 inches or 5.2 inches diagonally.

Part of the reason the iPhone 7 hasn't surpassed iPhone 6 sales could partly be explained by the numbers that are hanging on for next year's models.

Although the 7 is the world's most powerful phone, and is the logical successor to the 6 for those whose 2 year contract has expired, the iPhone 8, or whatever it may end up being called, is a tempting carrot indeed.

Hopefully, Apple will get their ducks in a row, and not repeat the supply problems seen at the introduction of the 7. One can only imagine the delight of the anti-Apple section of the press if they manage to mess up.

"10 years to get it right...and this?"

The headline is probably already typeset in readiness.
