Touch Arcade reports that, ahead of the Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix has unveiled a new, free-to-play, iOS and Android game, Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia, due for release in Japan later this year.

The mobile app is a spin-off from the arcade game that is currently popular in Japan. Prior to that, the first two Dissidia games were released on Sony’s PlayStation Portable. Dissidia is actually a type of fighting game where beloved and legendary characters from every single Final Fantasy game battle each other in arenas. Thanks to the fact that it was one of the very first such games to mix legendary characters from a series, and due to its unusual fighting system, Dissidia remains a very popular series with Final Fantasy fans.

The newly announced Opera Omnia game is not, however, an arena fighting game, and appears to be more of a social RPG.

No word from Square as yet about the possibility of a release for the game beyond Japan, but Square seems to want to get many of its Japanese releases out there these days, so it’s looking good on that score. If you’re a Final Fantasy fan be sure to check out the trailer after this post and see how many famous characters (and moogles!) you recognise.
