I am interested in buying a navigation app to use for driving on my iPhone. I would prefer one that didn't have any additional hardware to buy. Any suggestions? TomTom, something else?

I use Nav Canada. It is FREE and they have one for many different countries. It is a voice turn by turn gps. Worked well for me.

I'm using mapquest, it's pretty accurate, voice instructions and free.

Tomtom & Navigon, not cheap but work great. Given a choice I would buy Tomtom.
