iTunes update stops every time at same point

I have iTunes installed on my Sony Vaio laptop and the software version is 12.5.4.42. Whenever I click check for updates it tells me that an update is available to version 12.5.5 but every time I try to download this update it gets to the same point and stops. The point where it always stops is '26 seconds remaining 120 of 169MB.' I've tried about 6 times at one point leaving it for several hours but it never gets past this point. Any idea how I can fix this?
