According to a report by Philip Elmer-DeWitt on Apple 2.0 today, HTC has blamed its newly announced 26% fall in fourth quarter profits on increased competition from the iPhone and from Samsung. And it looks like things could only be getting worse for the Taiwanese company as well, as according to the report, HTC expects revenues to fall by 36% in the current quarter, despite the fact that it is set to launch four new models at the Barcelona Mobile World Congress this year. In a conference call to analysts, HTC’s CFO Winston Yung blamed the figures on “competition in the U.S. from iPhone and Samsung.” Elmer-DeWitt quotes recent figures from IDC that show that in terms of shipments, Samsung is the world’s number 1 smartphone manufacturer, although Apple has the biggest share of the market’s profits by far. This is particularly bad news, and actually somewhat surprising news, for HTC, maybe those new models can usher in a turnaround before the iPhone 5 launches?[/FONT]
