You need to turn on Haptics under Sounds and Haptics in Settings.

There‘s a Mute button next to the Volume buttons. Flip it. So that you see the orange part, and your device will vibrate without a sound.
Don‘t give up. Usually it‘s easy learning to handle iDevices.
