I have my first Iphone. I just downloaded all my contacts from my Gmail account, and it contains far too many entries. I'd like to delete them all, and start again with just those I want to have on the phone. How can I delete that file?

How did you get your contacts to the iPhone? If you set up your Gmail account on the iPhone and enabled contacts, that's how to remove them:
You can delete them in your Gmail account. Login through a browser, and remove the contacts you don't need.
Another possibility would be to disable Contacts in your Gmail account in Settings - General - Mail, Contacts, Calendars. This will remove every contact on your iDevice. That done, go to the Contacts app, tap Groups and enable "All iPhone". Then you can start saving contacts to your iPhone.
