Badge notificatons not showing up?

I have my sms messages, email, whatsapp and facebook notifcations all set on badges but not one of them show up when I get something new. I have ios5 and these have never worked. Any idea how to fix this?

Go to settings > notifications> touch the app you want the turn on badge app icon on.
