Wireless Charging is the Impetus Behind the All-Glass iPhone 8 Casing

MacRumors reports that KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has some interesting thoughts about why Apple is planning to give the next iPhone an all-glass casing. According to Kuo, Apple is making the change so that the phone can support wireless charging, with Pegatron set to be the sole supplier of the wireless charger.

Kuo says that for Apple to move ahead to wireless charging for the iPhone range, the casing really needs to be glass. Although wireless charging is possible with metal cases, the metal alloys can affect the speed of charging.

And then there’s also the aesthetic reasons for the all-glass look, with Apple’s Jony Ive apparently having wanted to launch an iPhone that looks like a single sheet of glass for many years.

Kuo is not sure whether or not Apple will be bundling a wireless charger with all of the 2017 iPhone range, but expects that at least some of the models next year will be bundled with wireless chargers, with the whole range getting wireless charging by 2018.
