Why am I getting notifications when they are turned off?

I have my phone set to not display texts or emails on my lockscreen but some one emailed me at xxxxxxxxxx@vzwpix.com (the x being my phone number) and it showed up under my text messages & not my email. Even worse is that I've never used this email before so how did they know to email/text message me that way?
