What are the perils with upgrading a stock ATT 3GS from iOS 4.1 to 5 or 6?

I have a bone stock ATT iPhone 3GS (8GB) that I want to upgrade to one of the higher iOS versions. What are the pitfalls and what should I look out for? I want to keep this unit viable until late summer or fall.

You can't update to an iOS of your choosing without SHSH blobs saved for that particular iOS for your particular device. You can update to iOS 6.1.2, save the blobs for iOS 6.1.2 for safekeeping, and jailbreak on iOS 6.1.2. There aren't any perils when you go from a stock iOS as low as 4, to a jailbroken iOS as high as 6, more pros than cons if any.
