According to a story on The Next Web today, Verizon has revealed in its newly posted second quarter financial results that it raked in revenue of $15.2 billion, and signed up 880,000 new subscribers during the period. Breaking those figures down further, Verizon revealed that it had sold 5.9 million smartphones in total, with 2.7 million of those being iPhones. The Next Web reports that this is down 16% from the 3.2 million iPhones that the company sold in the first quarter of 2012, with 25% of those iPhones going to first-time customers. As The Next Web notes, it was to be expected that iPhone sales would dip at some point this year; it’s eight months since the release of Apple’s previous iPhone, the iPhone 4S, and it’s possible that potential customers have been lured away by shiny bright and new handsets such as the Motorola DROID RAZR MAXX and Samsung Galaxy S III, and it’s also very likely that customers are aware that a new iPhone is due to be released before the end of the year, and are therefore waiting before upgrading. No one wants to be the person who buys a new iPhone the day before the super duper new version is announced.
