Verizon iphone 4s voicmail

I Have had my phone from Verizon a few weeks now and I have not had any voice mail or any visual voice mail This morning I had my husband call me and leave me a message and my visual mailbox on phone was empty and so I called my number to see if there was messages and after I dialed my number I heard my own message and it beeped for me to leave myself a message. Very weird. So does anyone know what I did or did not do. I'd like to use this visual voice mail that came with phone supposedly. Thanks.

Update. Ok I went ahead and called Verizon to have them help and walk me through the visual voicemail set up. I feel silly because it was on my part not theirs. So I thought I'd let anyone else know that may run into the issue as I did.

When you open to visual voicemail go to greetings up on the top left.
Then click on custom.
Then make your custom message and hit save.
This is how I had to do it. Is what I was doing wrong is I was clicking default I thought I could just use a default message but the nice Verizon rep told me since I am a new iPhone user I could not do that. Haha hope this helps someone.
