Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has reportedly exceeded expectations in its trial production of next-generation 2-nanometer chips, achieving yield rates over 60%. This strong early performance positions the company well for mass production, which is set to begin in 2025. If all goes as planned, Apple’s high-end iPhone 18 Pro models could be among the first devices to benefit from this advanced technology in 2026.

TSMC’s trial production is currently underway at its Baoshan facility in Hsinchu, northern Taiwan, featuring an innovative nanosheet transistor architecture. This new design represents a substantial improvement over the 3nm FinFET process used today. Once trial data and methods have been refined, TSMC aims to bring this production experience to its Kaohsiung plant, priming it for large-scale output of 2nm chips.

TSMC’s progress promises impressive performance gains in future iPhones. Notably, recent analyst reports suggest that iPhone 18 Pro models will exclusively utilize these cutting-edge 2nm chips—paired with 12GB of RAM—to deliver faster speeds and better power efficiency. Meanwhile, the standard iPhone 18 models are expected to stick with an enhanced 3nm chip process for cost reasons.

Looking beyond 2nm, TSMC already has its sights set on an “A16” process (1.6nm-class), expected to debut around 2026. Despite the name, it’s not related to Apple’s A-series chip branding. This technology will combine Super Power Rail (SPR) architecture with nanosheet transistors, potentially increasing performance by up to 10%, decreasing power consumption by up to 20%, and boosting chip density by up to 10%, depending on the design.

With TSMC’s rapid progress in 2nm chip production, the future of Apple’s iPhones looks brighter than ever. As we move closer to the mid-2020s, Apple’s flagship devices are set to become more powerful, more efficient, and better equipped to handle the growing demands of cutting-edge apps and experiences.
