That Dragon, Cancer, a semi-autobiographical game with an incredible personal story behind it, has just arrived in the App Store in the US, writes MCV. Already picked by Apple as one of its New Games We Love, That Dragon, Cancer was developed by Ryan and Amy Green, whose son Joel was diagnosed with AT/RT brain cancer at 12 months old and given a terminal diagnosis just before his second birthday. Joel actually lived for 4 more years than he was expected to, and finally passed away on March 13, 2014.

The immersive, narrative game retells Joel’s 4-year fight against cancer via 2 hours of poetic, imaginative gameplay exploring the themes of faith, hope, and love.

Via a simple point-and-click interface, the player immerses themselves in the personal memoir, which includes audio from the Green family home videos, spoken-word poetry, and in-game tributes to the loved ones of more than 200 Kickstarter backers.

Ryan and Amy Green developed the game with their partner Josh Larson and Numinous Games studio. It was largely funded by OUYA, which was acquired by Razer in July 2015, and marks OUYA’s first steps into multi-platform game publishing.

A multiple-award-winning documentary about the development of That Dragon, Cancer and about the lives of the Green family will be broadcast on PBS later this month.
