This is a general question and after much searching, I cannot find the answer.

I live in an area where cell service is spotty. Voice quality is often poor - I have AT&T service.

? Will text messages be transmitted and received with more reliability than voice service? In other words, if I find that my voice call is barely discernible and possibly even dropping out, will text messages still go through? (within reason - I know that if there is NO signal then of course nothing happens)

I was hoping that I could set up text messaging between my iPhone and the desktop PC at the house so that my wife and I can communicate in real time when I'm out on the farm away from the house (think safety and convenience) in case voice service doesn't work reliably at that particular time and location.

I have my iPhone 4S signal meter set to decibels thinking that is more accurate than bars.

Thanks!
