Text not coming through until I turn screen on?

So it's been happening for a while now, my messages don't send alerts to me until I actually manually power the screen on, then I check the time, and it says the message came minutes ago.. It's quite annoying and frustrating when I am busy and an important message comes through and I don't get it for 10 minutes..
