Playdek and Plaid Hat Games announced today that they have come together to create and release Summoner Wars for iOS. Based on the popular and critically acclaimed fantasy card game, Summoner Wars for iOS is the first free-to-play app from Playdek. In the game, players take on the role of a Summoner and control the Phoenix Elves as they battle a variety of opponents. Seven additional faction decks, such as the brawny Tundra Orcs, the calculating Guild Dwarves and the righteous Vanguards are also available as in-app purchases, which also unlock online gameplay after the first purchase.

Gameplay involves casting spells, summoning warriors to the battlefield and tactically maneuvering them in a bid to defeat their opponent’s Summoner. Each faction has its own unique gameplay style, which you must adapt to in order to emerge victorious.

“With deck-building elements, board game elements and dice to roll, Summoner Wars for iOS is the perfect mix that will hook you the first time you play it,” said Joel Goodman, CEO, Playdek. “Playdek’s first free-to-play game is our way to bring this incredible game to as many people as possible.”

“We heard from our fans that they wanted the Summoner Wars experience wherever they were without necessarily being face-to-face with their opponent, and Playdek presented us with the perfect opportunity to do that,” said Colby Dauch, owner of Plaid Hat. “We’re stoked to partner with Playdek to make this available to everyone who wants to give it a try.”

Here are some of the game’s main features courtesy of Playdek:

• Phoenix Elves Faction is free
• Four AI opponents allow intense competition and strategy
• Seven new factions are available to purchase
• Eight Reinforcement Card packs are available to purchase
• Mercenary Card pack also available to purchase
• Online play unlocked with first purchase
