this morning received a text at 7am from ATT that I have used 95% of my data (2gb), then battery died, when I plugged it in an hour later another text saying I'd gone over 2gb and was charged 10 bucks. Called ATT, they said a large amount of data usage over the last couple of days....I can't imagine what I've done...I never watch videos my normal usage is UNDER 1gb in fact last month was something like 500mb. Any ideas?
Thanks,,,,
Dan

While i do not have an answer for you, i had the same problem. I jailbroke my iphone4 and got the same messages as you. So i reinstalled 5.1 and have not had the problem since.

I called at&t and they credited my account. I have wi-fi at home and the usage data said i was using data at 1:30am i was asleep. And even if i was using data it would have been from my home wi-fi.

I no longer have overage problems but my iphone is no longer jailbroken either.

I had the same problem I think it's down the jailbreak my self, my iPhone is no longer jail broken either

You can check your data usage in settings-> general-> usage-> cellular usage, to see what it's at. Also, if you have push notifications enabled it will use data. Although I've noticed since jailbreaking, my data usage has gone up quite a bit. I just did a restore and re jailbroke a couple days ago and I'm already at 8.5gb somehow for the couple days. I watch a lot of YouTube videos though. Thank god for unlimited data!

never jailbroke the phone, wouldn't know how (but a friend would like her I4 unlocked to use while in Europe:) NEVER watch videos on the data network. It's showing huge usage yesterday while I was lying in the pool! and while I was shopping! Oh, and yeah, since I posted above....I've used ANOTHER 1GB of data, in like THREE DAYS....something must be horribly wrong, waiting till 9am to call.

update, per ATT did network reset.........I am still burning up data at the rate of 1gb day....another thing, the battery is suddenly running down REAL fast, with NO APPS running!! They'll give me a new phone, and have credited my account, but it's driving me nuts not knowing what could be going on!!

I'm jailbroken...always have been...always will be...and my phone does NOT hog data like that.

It's truly a *virtual Impossibility* that jailbreaking would cause your phone to use more data then usual. Completely 100% impossible.

All jailbreaking does is install Cydia. How could installing and application through your computer make the device use data? Makes no sense.

Ya know what does use a lot of data tho?

Constantly loading and looking through the Cydia application while using your 3G data.

Cydia loads all it's sources..every time you look at a package, the page has to load.

Not to mention the data that can be used if you happen to pointlessly have 5+ sources for Cydia added the the sources list.

Cydia itself can tack up the data usage of you are constantly looking through without doing so on wifi.

But that not Cydia's fault...it has to load its sources often to ensure that all your packages are up to date. It is your fault if you are continually loading Cydia pages through your 3G data. think.

A really good way to save data loading/updating Cydia sources is to update your sources through MobileTerminal.

Open Terminal.
Type:
su (press return)

Type password:
alpine. (unless you changed it..which you should. Press return)

Type:
apt-get update (press return)

Wait for it to say Done
Close terminal.

Open Cydia, and cancel the update via the blue cancel button.

This safes data because it is *only* loading the actual sources instead of loading all kinds of images that require and Internet connection.

It doesn't make a big difference...but there is a difference.

But the idea of jailbreaking itself making you use a ton of data is ludicrous.

Chances are...it was the restore that fixed your data usage...not "not being jailbroken".

Like i said....completely impossible that jailbreaking causes data usage.

You should restore your phone...and setup as new device.

Here is a question? Do you use the GPS a lot?

yes, Motion GPS Drive, but no more than usual latley.....

Have you tried turning your location services off and then turn it on app by app? Also, turn off sending data to Apple. And you can turn off System services under location services

I had one app in particular that was eating up my cell data. I think it was Shopkick

$data.jpgThis is a MASSIVE use of data, remember, I'm doing nothing different than usual, only new app is "Find my Friends" I used less than 1 gig a month and the other day the phone used that in ONE DAY! I went from something like 750mb last month to 5.4 gigs as of this moment. another day another gig of use! I've always used location services, notifications for my local news, facebook etc, always have. I am going to restore it right now and we'll see how today goes.....I've attatched a snapshot of my online bill if that helps anyone figure this out.....fyi this is the last day of my billing cycle..

A couple of times my phone did the same kind of thing, first time when it was a month old.

My plan is 1Gb per month, so I was being careful, using wifi whenever possible. My data use was negligible. Then it happened. In less than 24 hours the data use in settings showed downloads of 4.1Gb and uploads of 4Gb.

It's only happened once since in nearly 2 years, and I didn't get charged by my carrier, so I wasn't that fussed.

Never did get to the bottom of what happened.

I can see your point that you've always used certain services with no problem, but turning everything off and then on again one by one would give you an idea if something has gone "rogue". LOL!

Well according to that picture, it's all sent data. Which means something is running and sending data in mass quantities. If it were you watching movies or anything it would be received data. Which is most likely why you're not being punished. You have an app that's going rogue and Sending a lot of data. What apps are on your phone? This might be from an app that used to be fine and updated recently and the new version consumes a lot of data.

Can you check something for me?

Go to:

Settings> General> About> Diagnostics & Usage>

What has the check mark?
"Automatically Send"
Or
"Don't Send"?
