TiPb reports today on the phenomenon of “shoulder surfing”, which is when thieves steal your passwords by watching you over your shoulder as you enter them. According to the report, new programmes are now being invented which make this much easier to do on your iOS device. TiPb points to new warnings emanating from a South African security researcher called Haroon Meer, who has developed an app called ShoulderPad that is able to decipher the key presses that are made on an iPad. The app will work with a jailbroken iPhone, iPad or on Mac OS. The user simply has to secretly video a user’s key presses on the iPad with their iDevice camera, then use the app software to decipher the password. And as if that’s not bad enough, TiPb says that the software can be used with surveillance cameras and long-distance lenses. ShoulderPad’s image recognition algorithms, which are based on Open CV’s open source image recognition software, can detect what key you have pressed on your iPad when it glows blue for a split second. Basically, the maker of the app is warning people that this sort of thing is now possible, and to be aware when you are entering your password in a public place or maybe even in an office.
