Setting up gmail in phone settings

im having a problem setting up my gmail account in the phone settings.... It keeps telling me that my username or password is incorrect, but it isn't. I have the gmail app on my iPhone, and the username and pw work just fine when I sign into that....
Anyone have any ideas? This is my first iPhone ever (long time android user), so I'm not sure if maybe there's just something simple I'm missing.

If you use two step verification for your Gmail account, you'll need an app specific password.
