Rumour: iPhone 8 Will Have Custom Fingerprint Technology and Will Not Enter Production Until Septemb

AppleInsider reports that according to a story in DigiTimes, Apple will be using custom fingerprint technology in its forthcoming OLED iPhone 8, and therefore the phone will not enter production until September 2017. If true, this would be much later than the expected July start date for full production of the forthcoming iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus models.

DigiTimes’ source says that Apple will be using an algorithm from AuthenTec, a sensor company that it acquired in 2012, in combination with glass identification technology from Privaris. The source also says that the sensor will be manufactured at TSMC’s 12-inch line with a 65-nanometer process.

The report goes on to say that with the OLED iPhone 8 not having a physical home button, Apple will be using other technology, including ultrasound.

It’s hard to know how seriously to take this report, as if true, it would mean that the iPhone 8 would most likely be released in November, which would be unprecedented for Apple. However, that’s not to discount the report entirely.
