Problem Synching iPhone

I tried doing a Synch from my iPhone 3G s to my laptop but it refused to work. Must I first download iTunes into my PC in order to do this? I thought that it was enough just to place the white cable into the PC to accomplish the Synch. Thanks.

You must have itunes installed on your computer.
