Possible to Speak Texts Into 5s ?

I am volunteering with a neighbourhood programme and must keep track of a bunch of things I see. It is really difficult to walk around with a notebook in this heat and humidity. It occurred to me today that it might be possible to speak text messages to myself and send them myself as a way to record and keep track of things. Does iphone have that capacity? I know I can do texts, but it is very difficult to type and read on my phone's relatively small screen.
