Pictures Not Centered

Randomly, when taking pictures with my iPhone 5, even though the thing I want to photograph is exactly centered where I want it, the picture that is taken is way off. For example I took a picture of my son finishing a marathon, and what came out in the picture was only his feet and the pavement even though he was centered perfectly. Has this happened to anyone else? Any thoughts?

It mostly happens when I use the zoom feature. Another friend with an iPhone 5 has the same problem. Annoying!

Don't use the zoom. Crop it instead.
