PayPal has updated its iPhone app today so that it will now accept checks via iPhone camera, according to TechCrunch, which interviewed PayPal’s Laura Chambers at TechCrunch’s Disrupt conference in San Francisco. Chambers told the conference that with the updated app, the user will simply have to take a photo of the front and back of a check with their iPhone camera, to have the amount of the check added to their PayPal balance.
Some banks already have this facility, of course, and have done for some time, and Chambers points out that the facility was actually first introduced after the 9/11 attacks in New York, when so much of the financial infrastructure of the US was either shut down on purpose or hampered by the sudden demands on its systems. Legislation was then passed in the US to make such things as smartphone camera check paying in possible.

You can download the app here from the App Store.
