Lately, when starting the day, one could rely on two certainties: sun rising and another rumor about Apple emerges. Anyone who has the smallest connection to the tech world has heard or read about the giant company releasing new models of each their best selling products, the iPhone and the iPad. Both would be out on the market in September.

The latest news on this front is that Apple will be launching not one, but two (!) iPhones in the autumn. Apparently, the company is looking to produce both a non-expensive model to compete with the cheap-ish Android OS based phones and a top-of-the-line model, with state of the art design and software. At first glance, this strategy seems to be a sure way for Apple to hit the market hard and cause major damage to its competitors. But once we analyze the current situation, we find that there might a few snags on the way to achieve this apparent goal.

For starters, Apple currently has on sale two distinct models of the iPhone: the “low-end” 3GS and the “high-end” iPhone 4. Both of there are great phones, but are expensive and pose no real threat to the much cheaper Android OS units. This means that a brand new model would have to be developed, if the price is to go down that much.

This in itself would pose a great problem for any company. But luckily, Apple might have an ace up its sleeve, the “little brother” of the family, the iPod Touch. Upgrading the little media player might be the solution Apple is looking for. So far, the situation is looking good, since the iPod incorporates basically the same software as the iPhone 4 (with some of the features turned off), the same display (but lacking In-Plane Switching) and a photo camera.

Is that part of Apple’s grand scheme? We’ll just have to wait and see.
