ok, so I'm not new to the whole iphone/jailbreaking thing just the forum...been doing that since I had my iphone 3gs on at&t and no i'm down to the iphone 4 on verizon...but i've just recently learned about the whole downgrading and saving your shsh blobs and all that good stuff. What exactly does saving your shsh blobs do? I read the whole sticky about it but it doesn't mention a word about how to save them, where to put them, what to do with them one you're restored. Pretty bad write-up in my opinion. But can anyone clarify?

Also, anyone know when we can hope to see an untethered jailbreak for 4.2.10? I mean what is the point in a tethered jailbreak? I tried rebooting the phone the proper way and it still locked up on me and would get stuck on the apple logo forever. Wound up restoring my phone probably 10 times in the last 3 days!

SHSH blobs are signed keys that tell iTunes that it's ok to restore the firmware you are trying to restore because Apple is signing the firmware. Once Apple stops signing that firmware you can no longer restore it unless you saved the SHSH key while it was being signed.

You can save your SHSH keys using TinyUmbrella, it saves them to a hidden .SHSH folder so that you cannot delete them by accident. Also, Cydia has a button called "make my life easier" so if you clicked that at any time, your SHSH keys were automatically saved each time you opened Cydia.

If you wish to restore a firmware that is no longer being signed you must block Apples verification server using TinyUmbrella TSS server which will trick iTunes into thinking that the firmware is still being signed by pointing the verification at the Cydia SHSH server or your local SHSH files.

There will never be an untethered jailbreak for 4.2.10, you will have to wait until iOS5 is released for an untethered jailbreak. And yes, there seems to be issues with the tethered 4.2.10 jailbreak and nobody has a solution so far.

Hope that clarifies some things for you.

Thanks for the quick response man. So I don't have to have my SHSH blobs saved in order to downgrade? I can simply do the Cydia server trick?

No the cydia server trick IS the SHSH blobs it tricks iTunes into using the blobs you have saved on the Cydia server instead of the official Apple blobs. You must have SHSH blobs in order to downgrade, there is no way around it

Oh ok. Is it possible to use someone else's blobs?

No, every SHSH key is unique to each individual firmware and each individual device. The key is generated using your ECID(no two are the same).

So basically I'm just screwed :(

And why will there never be one for 4.2.10? And what is the projected release for iOS 5?

Because the untethered exploit was patched in 4.2.10 so in order to create an untethered jailbreak for it they would have to find a whole new exploit(which is very time-consuming) and then they would have to waste the exploit on the 4.2.10 firmware which would be a terrible idea since it is such a minor update that doesn't add anything. It just wouldn't make sense for developers to waste their time doing it.

When iOS5 comes out is anybody's guess. It will come out at the same time the next-gen iPhone is released, but nobody, not even Apple knows when that will be. The blogs have been speculating mid-september or early-october based on previous release dates, but nobody knows for sure.

After iOS5 comes out, who knows how long it will take for them to develop a jailbreak for it, could be days, weeks or even months.

Why is Apple releasing the iPhone 5 when it's not going to be compatible with Verizon's 4G LTE? Aren't they just gonna have to turn around and release a new phone?

They release a new phone every year, that's just the way they operate.

Yeah but to keep up with all of the other smartphones that will be 4G LTE compatible, they'll have to come out with something like first of the year...

Its called great marketing. Release a iPhone 5 without LTE and make millions off of that and then release another a year later and make even more millions. We are the frogs for apple's snake.

iCrank is right on the money. Apple doesn't care about using the most up to date technology. All they care about is releasing a new product every year to keep demand up and stay ahead of their competitors. Even without 4G, the iPhone5 will be the highest selling smartphone just like every one of it's predecessors.
