The New York Times has posted a chart of its Top 10 “Must-Have” Apps, which might have a couple of suggestions in there of useful apps you haven’t heard of. I always like reading what other people consider to be their essential or favourite apps, as it’s rare that any one person has the same list, and it always get you thinking about what you’d have in your own essential Top 10, and what are the main apps that you couldn’t do without? Anyway, here’s hoping that The New York Times’ list gives you some useful ideas and food for thought:

  • Google – In particular the voice search function. Not only is it useful, it’s just plain cool! It’s also just been updated with Google Goggles, making it even more indispensable.
  • SoundHound (Free or $5) – According to the NYT, SoundHound is an even faster song-identifying app than Shazam. Simply sing a tune into your iPhone and it will tell you the song, and even find the lyrics and YouTube videos of performances of the song for you!
  • Hipstamatic ($2) – A photography app that, according to the NYT, is a mixture of “simplicity, serendipity and art”.
  • Evernote (Free) – A notepad that syncs with free desktop and browser software that can be used to copy a picture, take a photo, record a voice note or simply write down a note.
  • Angry Birds ($1) – I think this may be one of the few apps that is in everyone’s Top 10, not just the New York Times’!
  • Urbanspoon (Free) – If you’re undecided where to eat, ask Urbanspoon to give you a suggestion. It will even give you directions to the restaurant. But try not to resent it if you don’t like its choices!
  • Star Walk ($3) – If you hold your iPhone up to the night sky, Star Walk will apparently identify everything in front of it, including constellations and individual stars. Sounds absolutely amazing!
  • Firefox Home (Free) – Syncs your Internet browsing history and Firefox bookmarks.
  • Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite ($5) – Enables you to open Word, Excel or Powerpoint documents and edit them on the fly on your iPhone.
  • RedLaser (Free) – Scans bar codes in stores and pulls up product information such as online prices and prices at local stores for the scanned item. Very useful for holiday shopping!

The Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite is now $10 at the Apple store. I guess they jacked the price up after the NY Times recommendation.
