New to iphones

Hi everyone, I'm new to iPhones and have just bought the new iPhone 4s. Very excited! It's all a learning curve and I'm not get with technology. Used my phone for first time and had diffiiculty hearing the caller, I've looked through settings and can't work out how to adjust listening volume, feel like I've gone deaf. Can anyone give me any tips? Thank you
