As an older guy myself, I recently found a $2 app that is REALLY handy.
It's called 'eyereader'. It uses the camera and LED as a magnifying lens, with our without light (shake it to toggle the light), and take a picture if you want. It's really handy for menus in dark restaurants, or capturing serial and model numbers in dark, tight places.
I have no interest in the app, just a happy user.
