my phone just shut down, plenty of battery

a further symptom is that is has been slow to respond to touchscreen inputs. not sure if these are related or not. So I came home and plugged it in and still nothing. any ideas?????

I finally got it working, I had to push the button on the top and the round button together and hold them. It worked just fine and I seem to have all my data. It's from April of 2013 and I do have the latest update ioS9

Glad you got it working. If your iPhone is still using its original battery and you have the opportunity, you might want to stop at an Apple Store and have them check your battery. Tell them what happened but that you were able to reboot it by pressing the start and home buttons simultaneously.
