Ina Fried at All Things D writes today that more retailers have joined in the recent iPhone discount-fest, a traditional sport that usually occurs in the run up to the launch of a new iPhone, which in this instance is expected to occur on September 12. These new discounts follow on from Sprint’s previously announced price cuts, which Apple was over the weekend said to have be price-matching unofficially in the Retail Stores. According to this new round-up from Fried, Target is selling the Verizon and AT&T iPhone 4S for $179, and Best Buy is selling the 8GB iPhone 4 for $49. This brings the retailers into line with Sprint, who have been selling the iPhone 4S for $149. If you’re thinking of getting an older iPhone and don’t mind waiting a little while longer, you might find that the phones are discounted even more heavily once the iPhone 5 is launched.

Was at the local Walmart last night... and they have the 4S prices slashed pretty heavily. The 16GB was $88.88 w/ 2 year contract extension.
