MMS/picture messaging app?

Is there an app that will allow mms/picture messages to be sent outside of iMessages? My carrier wants $5.99 a month for this even though I have an "unlimited" plan.

That's strange. I believe iMessage is a free service, your carrier can't charge you for an iMessage being sent. Correct me if I am wrong. MMS via SMS is different, your carrier can charge you.

iMessage isn't an MMS nor SMS. It's sent through your data carrier either wifi or 3G. Hence why it's free.

Ahhhhh. There an app called "whats app" that allows all this. 69p though.

Does the recipient have to have the same app installed or can you just send regardless? Would kinda defeat his object if not.
