Take a look at this awesome video from Engadget which shows how the palm of your hand can be turned into an iPhone touchscreen, and no, it’s not a belated April Fool’s joke! The invisible iPhone is the work of Patrick Baudisch and his researchers at the Hasso-Plattner Institute, and uses an Xbox-like depth camera that registers the user’s finger movements on their palm. A software programme then calculates what actions the gestures would actually be performing on the iPhone, and sends those commands to the iPhone via Wi-Fi radio. What is most fascinating about the project is the fact that the imaginary phone works by using the muscle memory of the user to interpret what their gestures mean. According to Engadget, Baudisch and his team discovered that iPhone users could accurately point to the position of two-thirds of their iPhone’s apps on their palm, without having to look at the actual phone itself. Obviously it’s just a prototype at present, using equipment that’s far too bulky to be practical, but Baudisch hopes that in the future people will be able to equip a much smaller camera and use their imaginary phones even while getting their hands wet in dishwater, for example.
