AppleInsider reports that according to research published by analytics firm DeviceAtlas, older iPhones such as the original iPhone 3G and 3GS are still very much in use, based on mobile Internet usage figures.

The traffic monitoring figures from 2016 compared the use of iPhones against other brands of smartphone based on web usage data from User Agent strings. The report says that the durability and strong resale value of iPhones makes them “a better investment than most Android phones.” In particular, the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s still have more than 3.5% of mobile web traffic share in Russia, and more than 2% in France and Japan. As far as the original iPhone is concerned, as well as the 3G and 3GS, they comprise nearly 1% of mobile web traffic in Sweden, and approximately 0.5% in France, Japan, Brazil, Germany, and Italy.

Interestingly, DeviceAtlas also found that web traffic for the 5.5-inch iPhone Plus models is much less than for the other sizes of iPhone, which is possibly more due to these phones being more expensive than the smaller phones.
