Issue with Imessanger on iPhone 4s

Can someone please help me with Imessanger, not sure why i cannot send any messages using Imessanger. I'm in UK just added a friend from Canada, we tired to exchange messages, but it just went as normal message with green color label, cannot get blue label as messenger on the normal message menu..

Any pointer ?

Does your friend have a iPhone with iOS 5. Do you have iMessage enabled?
