Having just been given an iPhone 3g I was wondering if it is worth jailbreaking given the fact that about 90% of apps and tweaks etc to work need an ios in excess of the 4.2 that the 3g supports.

What I suppose I am really asking is, will jailbreaking a 3g give any worthwhile benifits other than eye candy ?

Regards Bob

Welcome to iPhoneForums. Please read our forum rules and abide by them during your stay with as as well as our system forums.

In terms of AppStore apps, Apple has given in to the introduction of older application versions for legacy devices. Using this scenario as an example, The iPhone 3G is maxed at iOS 4.2.1, and many apps require iOS 4.3 or above to run. If the application was released in stores for support of iOS 4.2.1 or below, you will be able to download an older version of the application. I.E. if you choose to download the Facebook application, the latest version currently is 6.7.2. The last version of Facebook that supported the iPhone 3G (IIRC) should be version 4.0.2. Because your iPhone 3G does not match the constraints to install the latest version, it will not install the last compatible version. You can try this out by installing an app that has had its software requirements changed to a higher iOS like Facebook. A little pop-up will show up with this.

It's allways worth, but you can't forget not to tweak too much because it will make the iPhone really slow. On my personal opinion i think you should do it.
