With Apple cutting down competition wherever it goes, it’s no wonder that the BlackBerry has officially lost its last citadel to the mobile giant. Not so very long ago, BlackBerry was the top choice for most business users, but it seems that this is no longer the case.

The creators of this study questioned 2,300 mobile users from more than 1,100 enterprises worldwide, only to come to the conclusion that Apple’s iPhone was the number one choice for users of the business variety. 45% of respondents said that they were using the iPhone, compared to 32% who said they were sticking with BlackBerry. A year ago, the situation was pretty much vice-versa. BlackBerry scored 34.5% and Apple just 31.1%.

When the mobile owners were questioned about their intentions of purchasing a new phone in the next 12 months, 18% answered that they were inclined to buy an Apple device. Surprisingly Android, was the second most popular choice with 11.2%. The future looks grim for BlackBerry as it only scored a weak 2.3%.

Ben Wood, an industry analyst with CSS Insight said that once upon a time, there was nothing more secure than a Blackberry but then the iPhone OS 3.0 brought new and useful features, like remote wipe and remote lock, features that are so important to people operating within a business.

The survey was made with the help of 1,100 volunteers, all employees from businesses around the world. About half of them were North American, 32% European and the about 12% from the Asia Pacific region.
