All Things Digital reports today on another new survey from research firm IHS iSuppli, which tracks smartphone shipments for Q1 for the top ten smartphone brands. According to the survey, the overall smartphone market saw a surprising fall in shipments of 1.5 percent, the first since 2009, but Apple, HTC and RIM bucked the downward trend with some impressive figures. iSuppli reports that iPhone shipments rose by 14.9 percent in Q1, with HTC and Research in Motion’s shipments also rising by 6.2 percent and 4.2 percent respectively. The introduction of the Verizon Wireless iPhone 4 is credited with being one of the main reasons for Apple’s iPhone shipment surge for the quarter.

Continuing an unfortunate run of recent results for Nokia, iSuppli reports that their smartphone shipments fell by 14.5 percent. As ATD points out, such a huge fall can only mean that Apple draws ever nearer to ousting Nokia as the number one smartphone vendor in the world.
