TUAW reports today that according to data vendor MM Research Institute’s figures, the iPhone is selling fantastically well in Japan, and doing much better than its competitors in that important market. MM Research Institute reports that 24.2 million smartphones were shipped in Japan in 2011, with 30% of those being iPhones. In comparison, Samsung only had 8.3% of total smartphone shipments in Japan, and Japanese manufacturers such as Sharp, Fujitsu and Sony also lagged way behind Apple in the smartphone stakes. TUAW says that it is the iPhone 4S, carried by Au and Softbank in Japan, which seems to have particularly captured the imagination of the Japanese public, selling by the crate load and representing the first time that an Apple phone has been carried by two carriers in Japan, with only DoCoMo not yet getting the iPhone in Japan, although it does carry Samsung phones. This makes Apple’s achievement even more impressive, considering that it is only with two of the carriers in Japan and not three.
