According to a new smartphone customer satisfaction survey published today by J.D. Power and Associates, the amount of satisfaction felt by a consumer about their smartphone has grown to be greatly impacted by a smartphone’s battery life. The survey also found that battery performance is definitely by far the least satisfying aspect of smartphones as far as consumers are concerned, and that this is one of very few attributes of smartphones to have actually declined significantly in terms of customer satisfaction, compared to the previous study in 2011. J.D. Power found that satisfaction levels with battery performance differ significantly between owners of 3G- and 4G-enabled smartphones, with owners of 4G smartphones finding that their battery performance satisfaction rated significantly lower than that of 3G smartphone owners. J.D. Power says that one reason for this is because the new 4G smartphones eat up a lot of battery life searching for next-generation network signals, which tend to be scarcer than 3G signals. Also, owners of 4G smartphones tend to use their phones more – talking, texting, emailing and surfing the Web more than 3G smartphone owners do. This, in turn, creates more demand on a battery. "Both carriers and manufacturers recognize the fact that battery life needs to be improved," said Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services at J.D. Power and Associates. "However, the study uncovers the need for a greater sense of urgency--short battery life can result in perceived phone problems, higher rates of merchandise returns and customer defections."

The part of the survey most significant to Apple is the fact that for the seventh consecutive time, Apple ranked highest among smartphone manufacturers in terms of customer satisfaction, achieving a score of 839 on a 1,000-point scale. Apple performed well in all factors, especially in ease of operation and features.
