AppleInsider has word today of a new report from Gartner which reveals worldwide mobile device sales in Q3 2012. According to Gartner’s figures, the iPhone’s share of the market has grown from 3.9% in the year-ago quarter, to 5.5% in the current quarter. In total, Apple sold 23.5 million iPhones, with that total composed entirely of smartphones of course, unlike the likes of Nokia and Samsung, whose tally of phones sold included “feature phones”, which Apple does not sell. Selling feature phones, which are cheaper, and therefore do not generate as much profit for the companies in question, Samsung and Nokia are still able to commandeer the two top spots in the worldwide mobile device sales chart for Q3, with Apple in third place. Samsung’s market share has continued to grow, unlike Nokia’s share, which has decreased slightly. Gartner says that nearly 428 million mobile phones were sold in the third quarter of 2012.

It is a shame that chart isn't broken out into the three areas of smart phone, feature phones and dumb phones. Would be nice to see how well Samsung's smart phone division is doing against Apple. Nokia's smart phone division isn't doing to well since it went to Windows Phone.

Samsung has sold 30 million Galaxy SIIIs this year already. They sold 20 million in the first 100 days. The SIII is definitely not just a feature phone. That information is according to several sources.

That is exactly my point. What is the true breakdown? Because Apple only makes smart phones. And Samsung makes all three phone types.
