AppleInsider reports today on the World Health Organisation (WHO) study that was released this week which found that there was evidence to suggest that mobile phone radiation could be “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” As AppleInsider notes, this is quite the volte- face for the WHO, which has previously said that it could find no link between mobile phone usage and ill-effects on the health of humans. The new study, conducted by a team of 31 scientists, placed mobile phone use in the same “carcinogenic hazard” category as lead, engine exhaust, and chloroform, and suggested that further study on the matter was necessary.

As far as the iPhone is concerned, AppleInsider quotes a CNN report on a database issued by the Enviromental Working Group, which ranked the radiation levels of different mobile phone models, and which found that the iPhone sits firmly in the middle of the pack for the measurement of Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), which quantifies how much radiation the human body absorbs from the phone in question.

According to the report, the iPhone 4 had a rating of 1.17 watts per kilogram, while the iPhone 3GS had a slightly higher rating of 1.19 W/kg, and the iPhone 3G had a much lower rating of 1.03 W/kg. The lowest rated phone of all was the LG Quantum at 0.35 W/kg, and the highest rated phones were the Motorola Bravo and the Motorola Droid 2 Global at 1.59 W/kg and 1.59 W/kg respectively. The legal limit for SAR on a mobile device is 1.6 W/kg.

Is this radiation when the phone is being used for making calls or just general usage and does the phone emit this amount of radiation when its off??

My understanding is the tested levels are while the phone is in use. However I was advised by a friend who's a researcher to not put it in my front pocket, keep it away from the family jewels.

What a load of rubbish

How about if the phone is off?

The radiation is caused by the antenna's search for signal and sending data. So once the ambient radiation wears off there won't be any when it's off.

Sportsman: find a dosimeter and set it next to your phone for a few hours. Your phone will irradiate it, the question is wether or not the exposer time is long enough to be harmful at such low output.

Anyone know the SAR rating of the iPhone5? I haven't seen anything yet. Samsung Galaxy S3 is .48 w/kg. Wondering if Apple has an interest in reduction as well?
