iPhone 4S charging Mystery

About two weeks ago my iPhone started acting up a bit. When I plug it into the white cube (which is plugged into the standard 120 wall outlet) to charge it, the phone no longer makes the familiar chime sound that indicates it has now started charging. It also doesn't charge

When I plug it into my 12 V USB adapter socket in any of my vehicles, it seems to work fine; it chimes as it should and charges correctly

Back in the house, I've tried switching to different cubes, charging cords, and wall outlets, and the behavior is the same.

And here's the mystery: if I plug a 36 inch USB "extension" cord into the white cube and plug the cord from the iPhone into the other end of that, it works just as it should — chime and all.

What part of this system isn't working correctly?
