I live in the Chicago, IL USA suburbs, and have recently gotten an iPhone 4 after years with BBs.

My biggest issue is with poor phone and internet reception on AT&T. If my previous BB Torch was an 8, and the BB Curve before it was a 7, the iPhone 4 is about a 5, and unacceptable.

I have just downloaded IOS 6, which doesn't seem to have made much of a difference. I'm also trying to connect to my home wifi to see if that helps, and that is where the problem comes up. I have a Linksys WR610N router.

The iPhone keeps asking for my wifi password, but I've never had a password for it before. My laptop doesn't need a password that I know of to connect to my wifi.

Is there a way to connect the iPhone to my wifi without a password? Everything I searched for mentions a password, which I've never had.

Any comments or suggestions are very welcome!

Thanks,

vinice

OK, say you don't have a password for your wifi so that means the pervert 4 doors down could be using it to download kiddie porn. Probably not in reality but for your own protection put a password on it. Just in case.

To be honest if your wireless doesn't require a password it should hook up to it so I don't know why your phone doesn't. If you don't want to set up a password try changing the channel that the router uses. I really doubt that will help but it's worth a shot.

FWIW you know a real good pw for your router? How about your phone number.

Thanks, Hook. Last night I completely uninstalled and reinstalled my wireless router, and while there was mention of an 'admin' password in the written instructions, there was never an opportunity to use it when reinstalling the router. The phone still does not correct to it and asks for a password; even trying "admin" doesn't work.

I'm planning to make an appointment at the local (25 miles away) Apple store for tomorrow, hopefully they'll be able to offer some help.

To get into your router configuration, the default is usually "admin" "admin". You can change that but most people don't. Once you get into the configuration, there are settings for a seurity key/passphrase. That info was probably entered by you or the person that set up your router at the start. You wouldn't need it for your computer, because it already "knows" it. However new devices will require that passphrase. Often it is written on the bottom of the router if you never changed it. Or it could have been provided to you on the paperwork.

I wouldn't make that trip to Apple. They can't help you with a router configuration. You need someone that can help you with your router settings.

Thanks, Xray,

That's what I was thinking, but I'm the person who initially set up the router and I remembered it being really simple with no password. And when I went to reinstall it, it didn't give me any opportunity to use the admin password or change it. I've done some googleing , and will try to mess with it again and see if I can get into the router and view/change the password.

I have a few other items I want to ask the folks at Apple about as well, and regardless of the router password issue, I need to see if there is any way they can improve the phone reception, which is really subpar in many areas, even with IOS 6. I'm hopeful they will be able to suggest some improvements, as I'd like to be able to justify keeping it.

Have you ever been in the configuration settings for your router? Try typing in 198.168.0.1 and see if it gets you to the settings. Most newer routers set you up with a passphrase. If your router is that old that you don't have a passphrase then you do need to consider getting a new one. But, I think you are getting the two passwords confused. The password to get into the Router settings would be admin/admin. The password for your wifi encryption is the passphrase or security key. If your phone is asking for it, it is highly likely that you do have it enabled. Is there a passphrase/key on the back or bottom of the router?

Hi X,

I have never been in the config settings, and I can't seem to get into them. 198.1... gets me to an AT&T page about the number, regardless of whether the computer is connected to the router via the ethernet cable or by wireless turned on or off.

The router was bought new and installed in January or February 2010. I definitely never saw anything about a wifi encryption password, and there's nothing in the instructions or setup how-to about it. Nothing on the back/side/bottom of the router besides serial number, model number, MAC address and a 8-digit number next to a couple of circled arrows, which also doesn't work.

Off to the Apple store, wish me luck. And thanks again for the help!

Okay, so a couple of months have passed, and a friend was able to help me figure out the password for the router. Problem is, the phone still won't connect to it, even with the password entered.

WI-FI is turned on. I went into settings, WI-FI, and entered the password when prompted. Now, the Join button won't light up and I'm still unable to connect on WI-FI.

I suspect it may be linked to something like the DHCP, BootP, or Static tabs. I have no idea what they mean or do. Any further suggestions?

Thanks,

Vince, iPhone newbie
