iPhone 3G volume button reassembly

How do you make the silver button protrude in the exterior, there must be some part that goes between the silver button and the chip (3)? The volume button is too deep in.

I made the mistake of thinking I'll be able to figure it out, shoulda noted everything down when I disassembled it. Is the black diamond shaped plastic piece (1) part of the volume control by any chance?

Also, where exactly does this metal part go (2)?
